Madrileños love their nightlife and the city comes alive after dark. But what kind of bars and restaurants you encounter, and the atmosphere in the barrio can depend very much on where you happen to find yourself.
The liveliest and most popular area for entertainment in Madrid is Huertas, popular with tourists thanks to its large selection of bars, pubs and clubs offering all different sorts of music. At its heart is Plaza de Santa Ana, an attractive square perfect for people watching and historically a gathering place for local writers, poets and artists.
For more of a local feel, head north of Gran Vía to Malasaña known for its alternative and bohemian atmosphere or to experience Madrid’s vibrant gay scene at Chueca.
