While New York City is around half a day’s drive away by road, both Baltimore and Philadelphia are close enough to Washington DC for those hoping to go on a day trip or an overnight stay. Baltimore, just over 50 miles away, is one of the most important port towns in America and has an attractive inner harbour, cobblestone streets and plenty of trendy shops, restaurants and hotels. Philadelphia, which lies 140 miles to the north east and takes just under 2.5 hours by train or car, has impressive food, music and arts scenes and well preserved old buildings, some dating back to the city’s time as the second largest in the British Empire.
Those looking for a break from the hustle and bustle of the city can head to Chesapeake Beach, just over 30 miles away on the Maryland coast. As well as a scenic bay and boardwalk there’s a water park, fishing and a good selection of independent shops and restaurants.
